Note: PACE is a Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly which provides daycare and medical services.
I wake up at six-thirty just to come here. I get my stuff together… I just enjoy seeing the older people’s faces…
I came across PACE by accident, me and my daughter were going somewhere and she looked over here and she said, “Daddy that’s the place I was telling you about.”
She had heard about it and I think the next week she kept saying that we were going over to PACE. I said, “I’m not going over to PACE, I ain’t that old, I can’t be in there with them people. I still got a long life to live.”
So one day we drove by and I said, “Well let’s go over there and see what’s up.” We came over and I started talking to the people and that day, it was like a wide awakening, like I ain’t saying I changed then, cause I didn’t completely change, but it was like God woke me up and said that it was where I needed to be.
I said, “What am I going to tell the boys?” All of these old people in here and I’m young, but now I tell them when they ask me where I go. It got to where I didn’t care who knows. I started telling people and telling them about the people who are in here who are way older than I ever thought or dreamed about being. It’s just so good to know that. And they still have sounds minds… It’s just a good thing, you know what I mean?
I was caught up, but God loved me so much that he gave me the opportunity to get it together, even though I paid for it hard… That was the destiny I guess for me. I just thank God for that opportunity, especially when I’m here and I look around and it shows you really how sweet life is. I mean that’s something, when you think about it. I’m just like a baby to most of them and I’m sixty-four. Compared to their ages, I’m still like a kid. And just to be with them makes my day.
There ain’t really too much more I can say, except for thank God for all. Older people deserve more than what they really get because without them, there wouldn’t be no life, you know?
